Fiber access terminals (FATs) are outdoor enclosures used in fiber optic networks to house passive optical equipment and provide a demarcation point between the provider and customer. Within a FAT, the feeder cable from the central office is connected to optical splitters which divide the fiber signal to multiple distribution fibers leading to customer locations. The FAT provides a protective housing for the splitters and fibers, keeping them secure and sheltered from outdoor conditions. Typical components found

FAT enclosures come in a variety of sizes and configurations to meet the needs of different network applications. Small FATs may be deployed in aerial or pole-mounted installations, while larger pedestal FATs are used in underground networks. The enclosure is made of durable materials like carbon steel, stainless steel or composite polymers to withstand harsh outdoor environments. Most FATs provide access to the internal components through a secured door panel. Proper installation and maintenance of the FAT is critical to keeping the optical network operating reliably. Technicians need to carefully route, terminate and label the fibers as well as keep the enclosure clean.

FATs play a key role in fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network architectures by housing the splitters that service multiple customer endpoints from a single feeder fiber. The FAT provides an accessible fiber distribution point near end user locations, minimizing costs and enabling fiber connections to homes and businesses. FATs scale to match network expansion, with higher port count splitters installed as new customers are added.
